We are often asked about volunteer opportunities here at KMH and we welcome and appreciate volunteers year 'round! This past January, a dedicated group of chiropractors, doctors, nurses, and other volunteers embarked on a meaningful journey to Kimana, Kenya, to lend their skills and support at the Kilimanjaro Mission Hospital (KMH). Here is what one of the volunteers had to say...
"One of the objectives of our visit was to assist in the construction of the Maternity Center at KMH. Working alongside Phillipo and the expert construction crew, we engaged in hands-on activities such as slinging cement and digging trenches. The crew's expertise was evident, and it was inspiring to witness their craftsmanship. Our collective efforts are paving the way for what will soon be a state-of-the-art facility, dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of Kenyan mothers and their newborns.
Our other objective took us beyond the walls of the hospital; our team ventured into several villages and bomas to offer health screenings and care. These outreach efforts were vital in reaching individuals who live far from accessible medical facilities. It was heartening to see the holistic healthcare approach in action, with our medical doctors, nurses, and chiropractors collaborating seamlessly to provide comprehensive care.
The two weeks spent at KMH were profoundly special for each of us involved. We forged meaningful connections with the hospital staff and were warmly welcomed into their daily routines, even participating in the morning huddles. These interactions enriched our experience and deepened our understanding of the local culture and healthcare challenges.
Working side by side with the construction crew and the hospital staff created lasting memories. The camaraderie and teamwork we experienced were truly remarkable, and we are immensely grateful for the friendships formed and the knowledge exchanged.
Our journey to Kimana was more than just an outreach mission; it was an enriching experience that highlighted the power of collaboration and the impact of compassionate care. We are thankful for every moment and look forward to continuing our support for KMH and its invaluable mission."
KMH is a teaching facility. Professionals from all over the world come to serve our Kenyan friends with their specialty.
Here, Dr. Mikaela is going over spinal biomechanics with Cass, (a chiropractic student).

Our main focus during our outreach village visits is to "See a need...fill a need!" Whether it's healthcare related, educational OR social in nature, we are there to assist, serve and lending a helping hand whenever possible.
We traveled out into the Kenyan plains and screened for Diabetes, blood pressure problems and at the same time delivered chiropractic care to those in need.
And at the end of a hard days work… it’s not hard to catch up on some zzzz’s.
We were treated to a "Bush Dinner" by friends at Sopa Lodge.
We work hard during our visit(s) to Kenya, serving to help our Kenyan friends in health and education. It is a privilege to work with them!
But when we are NOT working hard, we enjoy the beautiful sites, animals and especially awesome people Kenya has to offer.
Divine Intervention on the Muddy Roads of Kenya
A Journey of Faith, Strangers, and Unexpected Help in the Wild
by Heidi Smith
Crossing Borders and Roads
Today was quite an adventure as we made our way from Tanzania back to Kimana. Our journey took an unexpected turn when Scott decided to leave the paved roads behind. During the rainy season, the weather can be unpredictable, and we've been experiencing rain every day. While crossing a bridge submerged in water posed no problem for our sturdy vehicle, the real challenge began when we ventured off-road.
Stuck in the Mud
The direction was clear, but the path soon turned into a treacherous mud pit. We found ourselves in the middle of nowhere, completely stuck. Despite engaging the four-wheel drive, the mud held us captive. With no one to call for help, the situation seemed grim.
A Prayer in the Wilderness
In this moment I turned to prayer. Drawing comfort from the scriptures in Psalms, I reminded God of His promises and asked for divine assistance. I prayed fervently for help, invoking the name of Jesus and asking for angels to be sent our way.
A Miraculous Encounter
As I looked up from my prayer, a beacon of hope appeared—a Big Life pickup truck pulled into view.. Three men emerged and made their way toward us. Overwhelmed with gratitude, I asked one of them, "Are you an angel? I just finished praying for help." He replied with a smile, "I don’t know. Let’s see."
Teamwork and Triumph
With determination and teamwork, the men joined Scott, who was valiantly trying to dig us out with a cement spade. Their combined efforts eventually paid off, and they managed to push us free from the muddy trap. We still had another hour of travel before reaching the safety of the blacktop.
Homeward Bound
Finally, we arrived home, relieved and grateful. Stepping out of the car, I noticed we had made the journey on a tire that was nearly flat. It was a testament to the day's miracles. I couldn't help but express my heartfelt thanks, "Thank you, Lord!"
This adventure reminded me of the power of faith and the kindness of strangers. In moments of uncertainty, hope and help can come from the most unexpected places.
